An Introduction to Solar Energy for Children

The amount of gas that burns for the sun is very large indeed! These burning gases make the sun very, very hot. The gas that burns also causes the sun's glow. And this is how we get light and heat from the sun, in the form of the sun's rays.
Solar energy is a form of energy from the sun. Like electricity, solar energy can also be used as power. Solar energy is found wherever you find sunshine. So what is energy? Energy is a force or power whose help we use to do things. We need physical energy when we need to move something like a heavy box. A jar of sweets contains lots of potential energy as there are many sweets in there or fire crackers that you use have chemical energy in them. A bulb glows because of electric energy.
The sun's rays travel and hit the surface of the earth and they have a lot of heat and light in them and that is why we call it solar - sun - energy. Without sunlight there would be no life on earth. Plants depend on it to live and animals depend on plants for food. Sunlight and the atmosphere make sure that our earth has temperatures that we can survive and live in. Solar energy can be used to cook food, power cars and other vehicles, power homes, and is 100% free! Unlike other types of energy, the sun won't ever run out.
Solar energy is energy taken from the sun that changed into electrical energy. This electric energy is also known as thermal energy. The sun has been producing energy for billions of years. The sun is the richest energy source. Solar energy is clean and can be made into other energy forms. With the human help it can power inventions to provide pollution-free energy. It can used as electric energy in homes, theatres, hospitals, movie houses, schools, night soccer games, greenhouses, businesses and in so many other ways. It can also heat water in your home and swimming pool too! It can make electricity. There are homes that get all their electric energy from solar energy.
Because the sun sets and it's not always sunny outside, solar batteries help store the energy from the sun. At night or on cloudy days these batteries can use the energy they have stored from the sun and in that way we benefit from solar energy too.
Solar energy can save money and make a huge difference in pollution. So if we all start to use solar energy we will have a much cleaner planet to live in. We will actually be taking very good care of our planet!
Solar panels can power just about anything from calculators to large homes or business. How does it work? Solar cells can directly turn sunshine into electricity. When light hits the solar cells on the solar panels, the collision (crashing) knocks electrons loose. The cells electric field forces the electrons to flow in a current. Metal contacts on the top and bottom of each cell create a circuit that draws of the current. To care for solar panels dust and wash the regularly and remove dirt and things such as bird droppings. To work, panels have to be pointed to the sun, at an angle of about 30°. Some panels are put flat against the roof but they do not do the job quite as well then.
So if we are responsible citizens of Planet Earth we should start to think about how we can use solar energy in our everyday lives so that we can make a difference to the well being of our planet.

The incentives have allowed both homeowners and corporations to resort to solar energy. Initially, the main deterrent to the installation of large scale solar energy systems was the high capital requirements. The incentives have lowered the costs and this hindrance is no longer there.
High cost of electricity and fossil fuels
The developing countries have steadily increased their demand for fossil fuels over the years. This increase in demand has served to raise the price of oil. All over the world, electricity is produced in large scale by the use of fossil fuels. With increased cost of fossil fuels, the cost of electricity has therefore gone up considerably. With the prices coming down and the cost of electricity increasing, solar energy is positioned as an attractive source of power due to its low cost. Actually, the cost of electricity has been rising by 5-8% each year while on the other hand; the cost of cheap solar panels has been falling.

Each time, some group of researchers boasts the claim that they have found the secret to producing efficient solar cells, on the cheap, only to watch their claims vanish into the obscurity that has become the history of solar energy. We got our hopes up a few years back, when we started seeing panels going up in our neighbors yards, but when we learned the initial cost of these arrays, we quickly dismissed it as an expense that would not effectively cover the associated costs. Each wave of the evolution of solar power has swept over us in much the same fashion.
When we first heard about solar paint, we collectively jumped out of our seats! The idea of being able to coat any surface with a photo-voltaic film, was just the relief that a struggling group of supporters needed. Dave Levitan said, in his January 2012 article for EnergyWise, "The one-coat paint, made with semiconducting nanoparticles, achieved a one percent conversion rate when tested using artificial sunlight." Though this technology has not been entirely shelved, we know to not expect further developments in the near future.
Despite all the hurdles that this technology had been made to overcome, all was not lost. In 1982, researchers constructed an outside-the-box solution to large-scale solar power generation, in Barstow, California, by using a field of mirrors to focus large amounts of sunlight into a single point. This sunlight can, then, be used to superheat water, convert it into steam, and use the energy of that expansion to turn a large generator.
As the global community comes around to the realization that our current energy solutions have created huge environmental problems, solar energy is becoming an increasingly hot topic. The demand for clean energy production is now creating one of fastest growing fields of research since nuclear energy took the spotlight in the 40's and 50's. It is hard to say that any of this will produce results, and we do not have time to wait for the next generation of talent to look at this problem. We can only hope that we see a solar breakthrough soon, and if not solar, then what other direction will our search for clean energy take us?

During the winter months, the heat absorbed can be radiated to the room and other adjacent rooms, thus providing better ventilation and avoiding temperature fluctuations. Painting the walls and floor in darker colors will also absorb heat better.
Clothesline
Do you own an electric clothes dryer? This is one of the appliances that consume a lot of energy just like fridges and air-conditioners. If you are used to using a clothes dryer, why spend more money on energy when you can, in fact, use the traditional method which is to let clothes dry out in the sun? People who live in homes with outdoor space have an advantage over people living in apartment buildings and condos in this scenario. They can take advantage of free and available solar energy.
Passive solar energy is one step to cut down cost and make households more energy efficient. While some of these examples require home remodeling, others are easy to practice and would already benefit any household today.

Solar Power For Renters!

The installation of most panels requires a permanent fixture to be mounted on your roof. This has been a problem in the past as most renters are not allowed or do not have the capability to install their own panels. I am one of these renters. I have been looking into solar power for a while, just to see if it might be possible in my home and I found the perfect option!
Through my research I have found that a company called SpinRay Energy makes portable panels that do not need to be permanently fixed to your house! These panels are transportable and attach to any porch or deck. This is an ideal situation as most renters, including myself, may need to move often and it would not make sense for them to install permanent panels even if they were allowed to. A lot of homes also have some sort of a porch so, needless to say, I was very excited about this possibility!
When I looked into this option further, I found that the panels that this company provides connect through the outlets in your home without causing any damage or changes to the electric system already in place. This is also perfect for renters. It is important that these panels will not disrupt any of the house's normal functions that your landlord has already put in place. When you move and bring your panels with you, it will look and function as if there were never even any apparatus there!
All of this being said, these portable panels are not capable of producing as much energy as permanent panels. If you install five of them, you can get up to 1,000 watts of power. This may not be enough to power your entire home, but it will significantly decrease your energy bill and cut down your environmental impact. Even if these panels do not provide for all of your electric needs, they are the best option for renters and technology is moving in the right direction!
These panels are not only good for your home and your wallet, they are also so simple to install that you can do it yourself! This idea is very appealing to renters because the ease of install will make it easier to pick up and move if need be. These solar panels are the best option for renewable energy for renters. They are easy, portable, and will not make any permanent changes to your house! Even if you do not rent your home, these panels would be an easy, efficient solution.

The Value and Cost of Solar Energy As Compared to Other Renewable Energy Sources

Expert Author John A Jewett JrIn today's discussion we will take a look at "renewable" energy, what it is, from where does it come?, how is it used?, and most importantly, what does it cost. We will also take a look at the many forms in which it is found. "Many forms", you ask?. Yes, renewable energy, contrary to what 90% of the human population believes, is not just "wind" and "solar" energy. As a matter of fact Solar energy, as a power source, has only come into "vogue" in the last couple of hundred years.
So how do we define "renewable" energy? Well, I like to use the following simple guideline as my definition of what renewable energy is. Here we go. "Renewable energy" is any natural energy source which is... "Renewable". Wow, sometimes I amaze myself. Seriously though, that's all it is. I might add the fact that it also is given to us by; provided by, nature. In other words, Nature is saying, "here you go people, use this for energy because I always have more".
OK, now let me clarify something here. Based on my above definition you might assume that Coal, Oil, and Natural gas are also renewable energy sources due to the fact that they also come from and are provided through nature. They are, however the keyword here is "renewable".
You see, Coal, Oil and Natural gas while created through nature and natural processes, cannot be renewed, at least, not for hundreds of millions of years. They are called "fossil" fuels because, as the name implies, they are created, literally from fossils, dead organisms, packed one upon the other, under enormous pressure for a long, long, time.
So, how many forms of natural, renewable energy are there?
We are all familiar with the two most well known, Solar and wind energy. However there are some other forms used but not as well known. Time and space will not allow for discussion of all these but I will name some of them. Biomass, Bio-fuels, Geo-thermal and, I'll bet you forgot this one, It's also one of the oldest, Hydropower.
Of all of these this writer prefers Solar energy most, after all, who doesn't love the sun? Honestly, there many reasons I believe solar renewable energy is positioned to become one of the most commonly used sources available within the next generation. What do I mean? Well let's look at three measures that determine popularity; cost, technology and availability/ accessibility
Cost and Technology. The cost to build and use any form of solar equipment has been cut drastically in the last generation. This is due to the increase in new technology, (ie) thinner, lighter, more flexible panels able to generate much higher, more concentrated power than the old heavy expensive panels.
Availability/Accessibility. I call this the "Henry Ford effect". When increase in tech. advances to the point that manufacturing becomes automated, (assembly line). Supply and demand take effect. More supply, higher demand creates more competition which forces lower cost. Availability and accessibility become one and the same in that, now the more populated middle class, businesses and homeowners alike have access and can now afford these solar products. Add to this the national and local government incentives for using renewable energy, and the advances in battery technology, you begin to see that this becomes a "win win" situation for us all. However, there are also critics of transporting electricity in structures below the ground. The positive news updates about solar energy is that compared to other forms of energy that require mining, oil drilling, and hydraulic fracturing, there is no carbon waste connected to solar energy other than what it takes to manufacture the panels. There is no risk to underground sources of water from solar arrays and there are no moving parts such as the blades of wind turbines that kill birds when they fly into them.

The estimates of analysts as recently as 2010, predicted costs of more than $7.60 per watt of installed power. Recent costs are in the $2.50 range installed and PV panel wattage is less than $1.00. There has never been a better time to consider installing a solar power array. So far, the discussion has been entirely about power generation, but another equally good option is solar hot water.
Research has proven that the most efficient method of using solar power is by using its thermal properties. Solar does a very efficient job of heating water. Systems are available for every size family or business. Every geographic region can benefit because the sun's power is strong regardless of the outside temperature. Direct and indirect hot water systems are available to address the climate related problems of any particular region. The Payback periods can be as low as 3 years. Strong consideration should be given to the purchase and utilization of a solar hot water system.
Now and then, we are presented with an opportunity to make a change. If you are a small business or home owner that could not afford a solar power system, this is a great time to reconsider. Basic Components of Solar Energy Panels
